... rockeries ¬

Creating a quality rockery is often more difficult than you would first imagine.

Remember, the aim is to achieve something which looks as natural as possible yet it must always suit the surroundings it was created for.

It is so easy for a rockery to overpower a garden. Careful consideration should be given to its overall size and shape. Materials should be chosen for their colour ,texture and mood. Generally only one type of stone should be used for the entire project to achieve the correct aesthetic appeal.

Ponds

Puddled clay was one of the earliest ways of forming a pond. A hole was dug , lined with soot to deter worms, then plastered with wet clay. Not so for the modern garden enthusiast, unless you have a strong inkling for ancient techniques and hard work!.

Nowadays there are two common types of pond liner : “Rigid” and “flexible”.

Rigid liners make pond construction relatively straight forward, but you are limited to a pre formed size and shape.

To make a large pond or one of your own design, you should choose a Flexible liner. As with all things, you get what you pay for. Butyl liners will last a lifetime but are more expensive than pvc.

At AKC we are happy to construct any type of pond you desire, even the “Puddled Clay”.

We can help design and advise on lighting, pumps, choice of liner etc..

Water Feature

A water feature set into a rockery brings it to life, adding movement and sound.

There are few things more tranquil in a garden than the sound of running water.

Lighting is another important factor. It will add a new dimension as the light of day fades and can be set on a whole manner of timing devices. ( please take a look at our Lighting page.
